There are few moments that reflect gravity, joy and the mysterious. Very little of what happens day to day can be regarded as ritual, ritualistic, a rite or ceremony. Stopping for a moment to write, to post, to mark down an idea or take a photo, is a small ritual that acknowledges individual vision. 'Do what you are doing' is a Jesuit and Zen imperative that calls us to focus, if only for a moment. Invest significance in the trivial, turn the mundane into the spiritual.

In your little black book
You've got the names
And the favourite persuasions
Of the people in the headlines
I'm in there under A
And I'm rated under B
You've got the photographs to prove it
And I swear to God it's not me
You've got a hard heart
Being hard is your art
You think love is a dirty dirty word-Soft Cell Secret Life
The duo of Marc Almond and Dave Ball came together at Leeds Polytechnic in the mid-70s. Their phenomenal success with the song 'Tainted Love' and the very kinky NON STOP EROTIC CABARET caused them to take off on a rollercoaster ride - one filled with extreme highs and lots of glamour. via BBC YoungGuns.

Row upon row of Schiacciata bread fashioned into the shape of little doves peer out of the bakery windows, the smell of pastiera and almond abound. Old ladies, and school children with ashes on their foreheads pour out of 'Sacred Heart' in Little Italy, they seem to be tumbling softly toward the equinox of spring. Rebirth and renewal today, late winter walks where the light turns golden, a migraine headache is not a halo, I am quite and reflective. Remembering odd quotes from a Catholic upbringing...They were much impressed by the thought of eternity, and they used to repeat often together, 'for ever, for ever, for ever.' admiring the victories of the saints and the everlasting glory which they possess. St. Theresa of Avila. Then again, I always liked the Fellini version of my lapsing Catholicism best.

In a sense, the works of art themselves are the only materials of the student of the history of art. All that remains of an event in general history is the account of it in document or tradition; but in art the work of art itself, is the event. Bernard Berenson, Rudiments of Connoisseurship.

Vision is always ahead of execution. Vision, standing on the brink of metamorphosis combined with the knowledge of material makes creation inevitable. The knowledge of my materials is my connection with reality, a reality where uncertainty is a virtue. I have no fear, just anticipation and electricity, high voltage moments where pencil hits paper, the paintbrush strokes the canvas and via execution, the first chord is struck. Driven by inspiration, provocation and desperation, I can speak in images and lose words, illustrate story with line, color, shape, challenge the beautiful and ugly, expose the personal and public. It was not word that first opened my mind, it was a never ending collection of images. Belgian artist Frans Masereel's work from the 1920s is a celebration of the visual. The Sun: A Novel told in 63 Woodcuts illustrates the artists' humanistic and philosophical leanings in a symbolic fantasy chap book. Man, travels from the comfort of a domestic interior through various situational segments toward the sun or enlightenment. A darker creation, Masereel's Story Without Words illustrates man as he attempts to court a beautiful woman. She is by design immune to his charms, and it isn't until he threatens to end his life does she break down and accept his advances. A set of prints titled The Idea is a complex visual portrayal of alienation, misunderstanding, trust and loss between a symbolic brooding man, and a helpless miniature woman. Masereel, a pacifist during WWI plays liberally with symbol and theme. The prints stay true to material, quirky, rough and often raw, the lines are indicative of a combustible internal life. German Expressionist in style, the work becomes decorative through the repetition of pattern and shape. Masereel is passionate in his examination of humanism, he evokes broad thought provoking philosophical questions that break free of the confines of story telling. Distinctly magical art that explodes from the confines of the form.

luchalogoTo camp or not to camp, that is the question. Today I eschew any personal, heroic, philosophical, or spiritual stance to give way to a more playful and ironic view of life. What is it that makes todays shows so different, so appealing? Los Luchadoras 'Putting The Hurt On Evil', the luchadores enmascarados: cheesy monsters, cyber chihuahuas, aliens, vampires, killer dwarves on Honda 50 Mini bikes, and mad doctors who match wits. Lobo Fuerte the worlds greatest masked Lucha wrestler, with the help of his wrestling sidekick Turbine and bad ass Maria Valentine must stomp, spike, drop kick, and body slam in the name of justice both in and out of the ring. Armed with groovy hot rods, crazy motorbikes, ray guns, high tech gadgets and high flying wrestling skills, the trio is ready to protect 'Union City' from the evil DNA morphed cyber chihuahua. Live action television show = silly pop fun.
