* Every day more than 8,000 people die of AIDS. Every 24 hours 13, 700 people are infected with HIV.
World Aids Day 2001

Link and Think.

I grew up in nightclubs: the Nine, CBGBs, Ritz, Whisky, Roxy, Sound Factory, Meat, Jackie 60, Shelter, Milk Bar, Art Bar, Smart Bar and endless others...brought up by an infamous legion of queens, freaks, muscle daddy bartenders, addicts, artists, performers, musicians, designers, philosophers, whackos, bohemians. I listened, I observed for so many years, I've lost count. Good or bad, they were family, and they guided me, inspired me, educated me, kept me safe, kept me thinking. At a time when very little valid information was available, my extended family helped me to become aware of HIV and the AIDS epidemic. Silent STILL equals death. AEGIS is the world's largest HIV website and the most comprehensive US on-line HIV database.

They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.

Faceless ghosts of casual photos, clippings, journal entries, I would hear later on, down the road, so and so passed, defined by a shake of the head, no words. There were indeed lost friends, hospital visits, followed by funerals, holy cards, the collision with anonymous blood relatives in overheated vestibules.

They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream.

Portrait of a generation with holes, fill in the blanks, connect the dots, you would if you were here to mark this in loving memory of...I dreaded writing this entry, but I heard your footsteps last night. 'Mano Poderosa' you would tell me and reach up to touch my head, a tear falling from my face, during the make shift benediction.

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
Upon the glass and listen for reply,

I'm negative, I always played safe with the other boys, I carried on, see, just like you wanted, I even planted Marigolds and Irises in the field by the stream. Although you would never stand for it...I miss you.

And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.

I'm not a kid anymore, oh, I forgot, you see...all these days. I live bravely, I learned that from you, and brotherhood always, like you said. Yep, so many little bros to look out for, to guide.

Thus in the winter stands the lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet knows it boughs more silent than before:

No apologies, tell the stories, the truths. Silence STILL = Death. Be smart educate yourself, educate others.

I cannot say what loves have come and gone,
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.

The above stanzas that begin 'They Are Not Long' are taken from the poem 'Vitae Summa' or 'Vitae Summa Brevis Spem Nos Vetat Incohare Longam by Horace: The brief sum of life forbids us the hope of enduring long' written by the English poet Ernest C. Dowson. The final verse is Edna St. Vincent Millay's 'What Lips These Lips Have Kissed' from the Harp Weaver Sonnets. Mano Poderosa is a reference to the upward-pointing late Roman Hand of Power talisman which continues in popularity today in the form of the Roman Catholic Powerful Hand (Mano Poderosa in Spanish) which is sold on holy cards and applied to votive candles. The meaning of the hand is the same as in ancient times -- magical protection.

Love Comes in Spurts
Cuz love comes in spurts
in dangerous flirts
and it murders your heart
they didn't tell you that part
