Weekend Wedding

This past weekend, a good solid Irishman married my younger sister in the Catholic Church. It was an all-gay supporting cast; my lesbian sister as maid of honor, and the groom’s gay brother as best man. Not that this dazzling show of gay pride was anything new, as both families have a long history of pimping the Mo’s for ceremonies, we gots class, ya’know. I can’t say my contribution was anything staggering, a nod to the tune from Jekyll and Hyde, a nod for West Side Story. I never realized I had the show-tune gene until now. These are the gays of our lives, or small intimate fun wedding reception. Tons of great food, some drink, excellent desserts and much laughter. Definitely a happy ending, or should I say a great start. I promised not to buy them the life size Venus de Milo, washable statue for indoor or outdoor use; I always say a ca. 2nd century BC Greek work adds loveliness to any setting. I settled for the best damn coffee and espresso maker I could find, and a dozen art mugs that hold gallons of my favorite coffee. Don Francisco blends are definitely the overly caffeinated adult version of a juice box and a nap.

Nam June Paik Fluxus

Nam June Paik, an avant-garde composer, performer and artist widely considered the inventor of video art, died Sunday at his winter home in Miami Beach. No artist had a greater influence in imagining and realizing the artistic potential of video and television than Korean-born Nam June Paik. Through a vast array of installations, videotapes, global television productions, films, and performances, Paik reshaped our perceptions of the temporal image in contemporary art. His TV Buddha (1974) is arguably an unsurpassed classic, a closed circuit video installation with bronze sculpture; an outside observation of an inner meditation.

Reebok to Release Jean Michel Basquiat Shoe

As part of Reebok’s I Am What I Am campaign, the company has released a Jean Michel Basquiat Shoe. I suppose that by 1983′s Post-Graffiti exhibition at the Sidney Janis Blue-Chip Gallery, most exuberant street art had been picked up, sold off and exploited as a trend. There’s been a resurgence in graffiti art as of late, a return to its roots. The Frenchmen Dubuffet called it outsider art; Spaniard Antoni Tapies was interested in how the art form would fit into the urban environment. What’s featured on sites like The Wooster Collective is closer to what writer Norman Mailer called ‘the anarchic manifestation of social freedom’.

Poems for Drinking Coffee at Formica Tables

So early it’s still almost dark out.
I’m near the window with coffee,
and the usual early morning stuff
that passes for thought.
When I see the boy and his friend
walking up the road
to deliver the newspaper.
They wear caps and sweaters,
and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.
They are so happy
they aren’t saying anything, these boys.
I think if they could, they would take
each other’s arm.
It’s early in the morning,
and they are doing this thing together.
They come on, slowly.
The sky is taking on light,
though the moon still hangs pale over the water.
Such beauty that for a minute
death and ambition, even love,
doesn’t enter into this.
Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it…Happiness by Raymond Carver
