NIN & Bjork Get Viral On Your Ass
Bjork is slowly releasing several cryptic teaser videos on the interweb in anticipation of her latest CD Volta to be released May 8. Pitchfork reported that they first spotted the news on Seattle’s weekly The Stranger’s Line Out music blog, Volta Videos posted Earth Intruders a few weeks ago; also the name of the first single from Bjork’s Volta.
Consider the case of the strange and mysterious MySpace profile of one Gerome Voltaire of itshardtofindabandname from Iceland. The profile page includes 4 20 second audio clips; ‘Thereza Is He’, ‘Denoisering’, the percussion-heavy ‘O Is for All Ages’ and ‘Oh It Is’. Pitchfork and The Stranger’s Line Out present further evidence of the pending Bjork release.
Bjork’s audio/video teasers pale in comparison to NIN and Trent Reznors elaborate World of Year Zero ARG that tells the tale of a dystopic world of the future, in which a totalitarian government has assumed control of the United States.
On the back of a new NIN tour shirt, fans noticed that certain letters were highlighted. These highlighted letters form the phrase “I AM TRYING TO BELIEVE.” Assuming that this was not mere coincidence, fans found that www.iamtryingtobelieve.com is an actual website.
Numbers on the new NIN t-shirts correlated to a phone number giving callers access to a preview clip of the NIN single, Survivalism. Recently, USB drives found in the bathrooms at NIN concerts in Portugal, Spain and England were found to contain more clues, various image files, videos and MP3s related to the Year Zero concept and release. Further page analysis revealed Morse code clues hidden in audio tracks, even more images were revealed through spectogram analysis of MP3s, and visuals buried in music videos to make a grand total of 28 pages in the Nine Inch Nails ARG.
There are numerous fan blogs and a NIN Wiki dedicated to decyphering the NIN mystery – a brilliant campaign that moves participants from album release fandom to participant.
