Making of Damien Hirst’s Diamond Skull
From Supertouch: “Much has been said about British bad boy artist DAMIEN HIRST’s groundbreaking $100 million diamond-encrusted platinum skull titled “For The Love of God” since it went on display at London’s White Cube Gallery in June, but to date, little has been revealed about the making of this bling masterpiece. Supertouch offers a step-by-step look at the creation of this masterwork which was created FOR the artist by some of the masters of European jewelry making at London’s Bentley & Skinner using over 8,601 of the world’s most perfect, flawless diamonds and 2,156 grams of fresh platinum (not to mention $28 million of the artist’s own money).” Check out this article, it’s quite thrilling and slightly frightening too, the photographs are beautiful. I can’t say Hirst and his work are immediately likable, but they sure are subversively seductive!
What an absolute waste of money. His 28m would have been better spent on the needy.
Webster’s has a new pic to use in its definition of the word “OBSCENE”. What a massive waste of technical skill and rare gems. There are malnourished men women and children who slaved to get rocks like these out of the earth. Think about them the next time you buy into this kind of obscenity. The art world does not need another tourist attraction. Does it take artistic talent to conceive of a human skill decorated with gemstones. Where is the art. Perhaps Jeff Koons should update his Puppy by covering it in rubies and one up Hirst. If both donated the sale of same to famine relief perhaps they might avoid purgatory.
